And
The Word Became Flesh - For Us!
Christmas
is not just a season, it is a fact. The atheist’s assumption that
there is no God filters into the Christian community with the assumption
that Christmas is about matters other than One Sovereign Fact: God chose
to become man! In a most unlikely time and in a most unlikely manner,
God, Himself became one of us. That is the celebration! I think of the
Christmases that were wreathed in sadness; my mother died on a Christmas
Eve. I think of the Christmases when all our holiday plans were dismissed;
the water pipe over our living room burst. I think of Christmases pinched
with budgets as worn as our living room water pipe had been. I think of
Christmases embarrassed with personal error; my first Christmas as Lorraine’s
wife I sent his family gifts from me and never mentioned his
name on the cards. I think of Christmases warm with joy, rich with love,
echoing with laughter, delighted in trusted companionship, shared with
friends more luminous than any holiday decoration. And always solid in
fact! God Almighty chose to become man! That is celebration! If your Christmas
be rich with friends and family, ornate with gifts and treasures, or pale
in loneliness and need, in your heart open a manger to the Fact: God became
man for you! That is celebration. And the Word became flesh and dwelt
among us...and we beheld His Glory - that is celebration. Merry Christmas!
