Communicating Mode
Playing a show out of town, I stayed in
the home of a friend while she was out of town. Following my usual routine
of watching the morning news as I finished my coffee I flicked on the
television which did not respond except for one station offering a dim
audio of a cartoon program. I walked to the front door to find no paper
delivering the news for the day. I thought of calling home, but it was
too early to reach friend or office. I felt an awkwardness I could neither
define nor dismiss. I checked the television; only the sounds of cartoons.
I checked my watch, the time was inappropriate to telephone calls. I looked
out the window, no newspaper. Then I thought of my lap top computer set
up and ready in my room. I turned it on and began to write. Immediately
the awkwardness eased. A trivial incident, a major message.

My lap top computer offered only electronic dialogue, but it put me in
a communicating mode and eased the strain of a brief moment of alienation.
Life does not always send us clear messages. Human relationships, great
as they are, are not always available at the instant of need and the relevance
of today’s news does not always reach our doorstep, but we need
never be out of touch with God. He has planted within us a Most Holy Computer
and the simplest exercise of faith puts us in a . Take full advantage
of prayer...by His Grace its process is set up and ready.
