Oh,
Taste and See!
A few
years ago, my husband, Lorraine and I opened a jar of wild plum jelly
we had been given for Christmas. It was wonderful. Even Lorraine, who
believed the word jelly had no meaning other than strawberries, loved
the fresh, sweet taste of the wild plum.
We enjoyed it for breakfast, added it to biscuits at supper and placed
it in a priority position in the refrigerator for future breakfasts. When
I opened this gift of jelly, I thanked my friend, the giver, in person
and I think I even wrote a little note, "Thank you for the jelly.
Happy New Year! Love, Lorraine and Jeannette." But when I had tasted
it, I realize my thanks were inadequate.
It reminded me of two principles in living life in God’s center
stage. One: to keep my thanks current, His gifts often go unrecognized
in their consistent usefulness. I must admit, I often thank scantily for
that for which I prayed abundantly. The other principle is in Psalm 34:8.
A friend of mine gave a devotional on this verse and I think of her every
time I read it. That verse prompts me to appropriate what God has given.
Sometimes what He puts on my table doesn’t appeal to me, and I question
His goodness in the serving, but like that wild plum jelly, when I taste
of it, savor it in its unique fullness, I find again that God is Good.
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is Good! Thank you, God, thank you, dear
friend for the verse. And, oh, yes, to my friend of the wild plum jelly,
we are loving it.
